The history of the Starline barn pulley began in 1883 with the founding of the Hunt, Helm, Ferris & Company, an agricultural equipment manufacturer in Harvard, IL. The company developed a leading "star" line of equipment, which led to the name change to Star-line and Company in 1931. While the original company produced a wide range of farm equipment, the name "Starline" is now strongly associated with these durable, antique barn pulleys.
Hunt, Helm, Ferris & Company was established in 1883 in Harvard, IL, and by 1888 had outgrown its original location, moving to a larger multi-building facility. The company's Harvard facility expanded over time, and by 1910, it was a large brick-and-mortar complex, with streets even being vacated to accommodate its growth.
The company's "star line" of agricultural equipment became so popular that the company was renamed Star-line and Company in 1931. It produced a variety of farm and dairy equipment, including the barn pulleys.
